FOUR REASONS to never F.A.R.T. at work by Odyssey Teams' CEO and President Bill John. "Failure to be Aware of your Reflexive Tendencies (F.A.R.T.) has no place in the workplace or any relationships! I’m not full of hot air when I say that a successful life or business takes a relentless effort to be Aware of your Reflexive Tendencies or A.R.T. Failure to do so just stinks!   In our work with over half the Fortune 50 companies in the world, we have taught them that individual building, together, is a far more effective approach than team building. To build the effectiveness of a team requires increased self-awareness where individuals understand the difference between a reflexive and a deliberate approach to collaboration and team ‘work.' Failure to understand the difference leads to stagnation and apathy. Four Reasons to drop the “F” word to create beautiful A.R.T. and not a F.A.R.T.   #1. If you are trying to build a life or a business that is better than ‘yesterday,' you’ve had to be more deliberate than reflexive. The gap between the two is where great s**t happens. Awareness is when we pause, check our reflexive tendency and then deliberately choose an action or focus that will get us closer to our goals. Comfort is the realm of the reflexive. Growth comes from neither of these.    #2. Reflexive is not having to think. It comes naturally, with little to no stress or strain. That’s a great place to be...for a while, but often our reflexive tendency is to be defensive when getting feedback, closed minded to new ideas or one-sided in our perspective of a situation. This will not leverage the diversity of a team or opposing ideas.     #3. Deliberate is when you rise above the reflexive comfortable path and invite stress, effort, or strain because you are blazing a trail to a new world. It’s no different than putting stress on a muscle. Too little and it atrophies, a moderate amount and it will develop, too much and you can cause damage.         #4. Failure to have the Awareness of your Reflexive Tendencies (F.A.R.T.) just stinks. When you are challenging your reflexive tendencies, you will most likely create more stress. Understand that you NEED stress to grow. It motivates, sharpens performance, and makes you resilient and adaptable. Snapshots of some awesome moments of Lain Hensley - HEAD DREAM CHASER leading our Life Cycles charity team building experience with WestRock Company! Participants built bikes and then gave them away to children in need, collaborating beautifully. Odyssey Teams invented this experience in October of 2000, but did you know it's more than a giveback? There are thousands of transformational observations and connections that people have made over almost 25 years of delivering this program to thousands of participants around the world, leading to more than 23,000 bicycles built and donated.
