Wednesday, May 22 at 8-9 AM EDT join Holger Seim and Christina Richardson 👇
Fuelling hundreds of ambitious founders every month via safe group-coaching spaces as founder at weare3Sixty | Trainer | Founder-coach | Entrepreneurship Fellow at UCL
I am so looking forward to speaking to Holger Seim in our upcoming FounderFuel LIVE event! Blinkist went from an idea with uni friends in 2012, to 31m subscribers and Series C funding, and then a successful exit to Go1. Like most founder journeys though, the path was rarely simple and plenty of tenacity and resilience was needed along the way. In our FounderFuel Live series we speak to inspiring founders who are out there ahead of us, about the highs and lows of the journey and about how they survived and thrived along the way. Our guests are always open and honest about the reality and the demands they faced and will share practical strategies for how we can perform at our best as founders and scaling leaders. Founder friends, you can join us. Book in here: https://lnkd.in/evN5RU2p Using passcode is: FounderFamilyLN Please share and repost, so that we can spread Holger’s inspiring story far and wide amongst our startup to scaleup ecosystem. weare3Sixty #FounderFuel #founders #entrepreneurs #foundersfuellingfounders With thanks to all those advisors and supporters who've helped and inspired this new series: Simon Hulme Richard Anson Paddy Willis, FRSA Richard Blakesley Ian Merricks, FBCS FRSA Mike Bandar 🚀 Toby Allen Timothy Barnes 🦖 Christopher Lowe India Wardrop Justin Cross Holly Hudson Holly Knower Lisa Mikkelsen Euan Bell Emily Goddard Camille Reltien Victoria Navazo Morrondo Rachel Stockey Sanja Moll Naomi Partridge Clare Ward Caroline Rae Maria Barr Ria Khan Winnie Yan

Investing millions in Main St businesses & teaching you how to own the rest | HoldCo, VC fund, Founder
28% of Americans haven't read a book in the past year. One biz turned this into a $35M/year opportunity: Four German college friends – Holger, Niklas, Sebastian, & Tobias – shared notes on nonfiction books to get insights faster. But, after entering the workforce in 2012, they struggled to find time for reading... Stressed and unfulfilled, the friends wanted a way to discover new ideas that didn't consume as much time or energy. And that's when inspiration struck: If sharing condensed book notes between four friends was helpful... Then productizing this for mobile could appeal to millions of busy people. The cool thing about this? Their first product wasn't fancy software. It was really just the notes they'd shared amongst themselves. Sharing your solutions for your OWN problems is always an excellent way to: 1) find ideas and 2) test out a product So they decided to compile “blinks”: 15-minute summaries of popular nonfiction books spanning philosophy, productivity, self-improvement, etc. But investors weren't convinced. They were repeatedly refused funding. Still, the group quit their full-time jobs... Note: I wouldn't personally recommend quitting your day job after your startup has been repeatedly denied funding. BUT, for these guys?? It actually - well, still didn't turn out. After months of grinding away, Blinkist's launch was a dud... It took 3 months to hit 100 downloads. But the guys were super scrappy - and practiced what they preached. A lot of their eventual success came from the non-fiction books they read. Like The Lean Startup's lessons on speaking to users, getting feedback & constantly iterating. This led to features like audio narration and a huge library of titles, which eventually tipped the scales in their favor. They suddenly started growing FAST. While their biggest growth lever has been paid marketing, there's one specific technique I found super interesting: Ever see those clickbaity links at the bottom of news stories? The 'burn body fat in one week' types? Well, they're called "advertorials" and typically get a bad rep. But Blinkist used these. They bet on news article readers being potential Blinkist readers. They were right. Blinkist has since blown up with 23+ million downloads to date. They were acquired in 2023 for an unknown amount that was "significantly more" than their last valuation of $160M. It's a biz story I love for several reasons: • The founders solved their own problem, then realized EVERYONE could benefit. • Most would have given up after no progress, no investors & no money. • The founders pushed on – not ignorantly but methodically. ↓ PS: If you enjoyed this story, please feel free to repost.

Try naming the set of animals at the top of this picture. Now look at the second set of animals below and try to name them. Your habits may get in the way. 👀 We have a habit of reading and automatically interpreting the words, so even when we know the picture says otherwise, habits get in the way of correctly labeling the animals. 🐐 🐖 🦆 💡 What you’ve just encountered is the feeling of acting on habit. Sometimes these habits are so deeply ingrained in us, that we barely acknowledge them as learned behaviors. But rest assured our behaviors are learned and they can also be unlearned over time If we wish to change. 🔗 This exercise is taken from our Guide, Breaking Bad Habits with Wendy Wood, where you can discover the science behind habit-building: https://lnkd.in/d9KjSvnt ℹ Wendy Wood is a professor of psychology and business at the University of Southern California, and the author of "Good Habits, Bad Habits." In this Guide, she teaches you how to automate and create lasting habits that will steer you toward your long-term goals. Discover the answer to questions like why sleep can fix your bad habits, and how to make change last.
